Autism is NOT: 8 behaviors that are common stereotypes of “autism behaviors”

There are still so many misconceptions and misunderstandings around autism. These misunderstandings can cause a great deal of pain because they can perpetuate harmful stereotypes.

The following are a list of common misconceptions about what autism “is” but are not actually “autism behaviors.” They are simply human behaviors, some of which are behaviors found in NT individuals also! 

  • Lack of speech
  • Lack of eye contact
  • Behavior problems
  • Self-stim
  • Academic delays
  • Habits or rituals
  • Not liking other people
  • Wanting to be alone
