Relationship-based social communication (RBSC) support is largely omitted from health, education and social care provision for children, young people and adults with autism, yet it underpins their ability to learn, to live independently, to make and maintain friendships, to secure meaningful employment and to have good mental health.
The conference will look at how two autism RBSC interventions (Relationship Development Intervention (RDI) and Gentle Teaching) can support families of people with learning difficulties and/or autism to help their loved ones: become better able to cope with uncertainty and unpredictability; be better able to regulate their emotions; be better able to understand themselves and others. It will also support parents to understand how to navigate education, health and social care services in order to seek to secure RBSC provision for their loved ones.
Speakers:
Zoe Thompson, parent of a young adult with whom RDI is used and Head of Development, Bright Futures School where the principles of RDI are embedded into the curriculum
Sharon Bradbrook-Armit, RDI Consultant and parent of a young adult with whom RDI is used
Brendan Maguire, Director, Learning Together and Gentle Teaching Consultant
David and Jayne Mallinson, parents of a young adult with whom Gentle Teaching is used
Sarah Dunn, Headteacher Bradstow School where the Gentle Teaching approach is embedded into the curriculum
