I have a child 11 years old with Autism – she can talk but not really functioning in communication much. I love RDI because you are focused on relationship and her quality of life and not just her performing tricks to make the school look better.

I did not understand your video – could you say that all in lay mens terms for me…thanks. I like my TRUTH straight – I can take it – you don’t have to dance around or sugar coat my information.

I have a local website to help parents find resources in our area. We have a group but no one comes and no one wants to help others. SAD…. 🙁

Can you talk more about internal motivation? My daughter is 14. She was low functioning at a young age now much higher functioning . She has been hospitalized after being put on an ssri for anxiety. I do not know how to motivate her. She had traditional behavior support most of her life. It is backfiring in a sense- if anyone mentions rewards or earning things she loses her temper. I do not know how to coach her this year in school.

Tonya and Linda, thanks for taking the time to reach out. I know these posts can bring up more questions that aren’t always answerable in a short comment. The lack of motivation for growth is the root of the developmental divergence between ASD and typically-developing infants. And building internal motivation is what the RDI program is all about and it means going back to some foundational things with your child to learn to rebuild what is missing. One of the crucial elements for this is to have a guide of your own, who can train you to spot those things that need repairing and give you the tools to do it on your own eventually. I would encourage you to contact an RDI consultant who is trained in this methodology: https://www.rdiconnect.com/consultant-lp/.
